The Order was founded in 1988 and received official recognition of the Church in1989. Saint Augustine of Canterbury was chosen as the Patron Saint of the Order since his difficulties as a missionary to England in 596 A.D. exemplifies similar perplexities encountered by many in the Church today. Often he felt alone, discouraged, even afraid. Nevertheless, with encouragement and practical advice from others he continued to spread and consolidate the faith.

The purpose of the Order then is to strengthen the Church by first giving ourselves to God, and then to give prayerful support, encouragement, and assistance to other members of the Order and others not of the Order so that they, like Saint Augustine of Canterbury, may also spread and consolidate the faith.

In Christi nominee (In Christ's name) was selected as the motto of the Order since all we do should be for the glorification of our Lord.

The Order of Saint Augustine of Canterbury is dedicated to serving the Church and uses the Ministries of both married and single men, not living in Communities, to attain this goal. The Promises of the Order are Obedience , Service , and Responsibility .

Any baptized and confirmed communicant in good standing of a Church in Apostolic Succession, and has the conviction that he is called to the Religious Life is eligible for consideration as a member.
